Wenger Challenges Vela To Seize Cup Opportunity

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has challenged Carlos Vela to seize his opportunity to impress.

Vela, the 19-year-old Mexico forward, is expected to feature against Wigan in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night following his hat-trick against Sheffield United in the previous round.

With Emmanuel Adebayor injured and Robin van Persie suspended for another two matches, Vela has a chance to show Wenger he has power in his game to compliment his ability.

“He is naturally gifted, quick, intelligent and with very good technique, so you now want him to add that combative, determined side that makes the difference,” Wenger said.

“He’ll quickly be a world-class striker when he adds that to his game. Some day we all get our chance – the target is to take that chance when you get it, and he has the potential to do that.”

Wenger rests his senior players at this stage of the competition and bloods his youngsters, so the likes of Vela and Aaron Ramsey should get their chance to shine.

Predicted Starting XI

Hoyte – Song – Djourou – Gibbs
Wilshere – Randall – Ramsey – Merida
Simpson – Vela
