Wenger Tips Vela To Star In The Carling Cup

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has tipped Mexican forward Carlos Vela to make a large impact on the Gunners’ Carling Cup campaign this year.

Wenger has consistently used the Carling Cup to blood promising youngsters and that trend is set to continue with 19-year-old Vela’s inclusion in the youthful squad which will take on Sheffield United tomorrow evening.

“I worked very hard to get him and when he came on the other time [against Newcastle] he did very well,” his manager told Arsenal TV.

“We believe highly of him in a central position. He can play central as well but he’s an Eduardo basically.

“He’s a similar type – left-footed, intelligent runs and a good finisher – there are similarities with Eduardo.”

A young Arsenal side met Sheffield United in last year’s Carling Cup fourth round. Croatian striker Eduardo da Silva scored a brace and Denilson added a third as a young Arsenal side strolled into the last eight. The Gunners were eventually eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur in the last four.
