Carlos Vela made his long awaited Premier League debut this evening as a second half substitute against Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
The 19-year-old Mexican has been struggling with fatigue and a slight groin problem, but Vela replaced Robin van Persie on 62 minutes after the Dutchman pulled up lame following a fierce shot off the bar.
van Persie have previously put the Gunners 2-0 up at half time with a penalty on 18 minutes, before putting the final touches to a flowing move with 4 minutes of the half left.
Emmanuel Adebayor and Samir Nasri combined to set up Carlos’ close friend Denilson on 59 minutes, with the third goal wrapping up the points. Vela was introduced after van Persie had treatment on his ankles, any potential injury to the Dutch striker could hand Carlos further opportunity to extend his run in the team.
Vela was instantly involved by setting up fellow sub Walcott who thrashed a shot at Given. Carlos looked bright and lively as Arsenal looked for more goals, Kolo Toure this time with the effort.
Carlos linked up well with Nasri and Adebayor on the left hand side, but as time ticked down the Gunners began to ease of the tempo.
With just 5 minutes left it should have been 4-0. Vela’s deft flick opened Newcastle up, Fabregas back heeled Adebayor through, he ran left to right before finding Walcott in space, but the England international couldn’t apply the finish for his second goal in as many games.
Sensing more chances, Vela and Adebayor linked up again in the middle, but Fabregas failed to read the killer ball on the edge of the box.
